Dysfunctional Power
As a first time viewer of the film V For Vendetta, I noticed right off the bat that this wasn’t the movie I’d typically choose to see. I found within the first fifteen minutes, that the film consisted of a lot of talking. For me this meant I was in for a boring 2 hour ride of listening. At the beginning of the film, one is lost to what is going on, but can tell that Evey (Natalie Portman) and V (Hugo Weaving) will be the main characters. The film is focused on them and their whereabouts, but seem to mention the history of a specific date, “November the fifth.”
From there it leads to the current dystopian society of London, where the action-filled film takes place. The viewers follow Evey to the imprisoned city, where everyone is indoors since there is a curphew. After being harassed by “fingermen,” she meets V who takes her to the rooftop of a building. This scene begins the whole storyline of the film, as V blows up a monument “Old bailey,” and plays music for the whole city to hear. The citizens are then in awe that illegal events can occur in their uptight society. Evey takes this event, as nothing but soon finds herself in the middle as V interrupts her workplace, the television broadcast of London, and puts himself on air for all citizens to hear. He informs everyone about his plan to take down the House of Parliament on November the fifth, a whole year from the current date and asks for their support in going against the government. He explains how the high chancellor, Adam Sutler (John Hurt), is using all words to gain control and manipulate them. This shows how the government was corrupt, and ruled by dictator who didn't have the best interest for his people.
The government in result goes after him, and almost catches him, when surprisingly Evey saves him. V takes then takes Evey with him to his secret home underground. She finds herself opening up to the so-called terrorist of London. She explains how her brother was killed, and soon after lost her parents when they became politician protestors and got caught by the government and were killed. V feels her pain, and secretly goes on missions to kill government officials, which all seem to have done something to him, but the viewer is not quite sure of what. At this point the film is more captivating, at least it was for me. Evey is upset at the fact that V has not told her the truth of his killings, so she decides to lie and offer her help for his next victim. She finds herself able to escape V and runs to her boss’ Gordon home.
Here she catches up on his life and sexuality and how he has hid it from the society and government, so he can be the big T.V host he is. Meanwhile V is still returning his pain and revenge to more government officials. Here one learns the truth to what and why V is doing everything he is doing. The viewers discover that he was an experiment, from the government who spread a virus to gain control the population of London. This is also the cause to Evey’s brother’s death. However V was the only survivor and warns everyone to know the truth between the government’s shameful previous actions. Gordon then decided to take a risky action and produce a show making fun of londons own chancellor. This causes his death and Eveys turnaround. By turnaround I mean she is captured and tortured unless she gives the whereabouts of V. However secret notes of a forbidden gay life, helps her cope through the hardships of being imprisoned and once she states to be killed rather than give in to their demands, V releases her. V taught her this lesson so she can no longer feel fear. Evey leaves but promises to revisit V before the fifth of November. V continues on with his revenge and kills everyone he had planned to, including the chancellor, Adam Sutler. Before this however, Evey confesses her love for V and in return he leaves her with his plans and everything he’s worked for. Evey finds V dying and we find the true love they have for each other. In result, Evey states,” his country needs more than a building right now. It needs hope,” and destroys House parliament. In conclusion the people of London realized that they did have power, and had no need to live with a curfew nor a corrupt government.
Through this film, one discovers how unethical a society can be and how dystopia is widely shown through the idea of politics. Distopian lifestyle is not so different of the peoples lifestyle in the movie V for Vendetta. In the movie V who is the person trying to free the people from the government is trying to teach the people to stand up and have a voice. I mentioned the film seemed to be boring but sooner in the storyline captivated my interest. Overall, it was a well-written film in which I’d recommend to other. However give in mind, you must fully concentrate and pay attention because it can lose the viewer if a scene is missed.

"My father was a writer. You would've liked him.
He used to say that artists used lies to tell the truth,
while politicians use them to cover the truth."
