A false Life
Are you tired of reading those normal mainstream novels, that include vampires and an overly dramatic love romances? Well the book Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro, surely does the trick to a new type of novel, in a good way. In this novel you will be introduced to the narrator Kathy H. whom is a carer for those who make donations. However her story begins with memories of her past at Hailsham. Hailsham is a "boarding school," that influences teachings on art and seems to be full of curiosities and care for the students. Through her care-taking, she reminisces of her childhood at Hailsham; with her stories shared one can only think of the great life the students there would have. Hailsham brought her an unforgettable friendship with other "students," Tommy and Ruth. Through her explanations of their attendance at Hailsham the reader is left with multiple mysteries. Through time one learns about the importance of art, emotions, sex and health in the Hailsham students. After lots of reading and investigation, the reader learns how these students are not living the good life but a "clone" life. After a meltdown by a teacher, all students of Hailsham understand why there was lots of care for them. Kathy, Ruth and Tommy realize they are doubles for someone in the real world and are simply being raised to make donations for true humans who need their organs. This makes them seem melancholy towards their life and not really care, since they are not going to be living the life they want.
Although the topic of cloning and an unethical world is engaging to any reader, Kazuo doesn't stop there. He includes a romance between Kathy and Tommy, which surely upsets me. (Yes, there is a love Drama involved in this novel as well!) It's upsetting to the reader because Ruth is romantically involved with Tommy. Kathy however is still a great friend to the both of them and is a carer for Ruth, which only resurfaces those mixed emotions from their past. It simply hurts to know that Kathy is not a person to ruin a friendship for the love of her life. After trying to clear up her past with Ruth and Tommy, they all discover the possibility of being deferred of being donors. This makes it even more intriguing to continue reading, because Kathy can have the possibility of being Happy. The trouble is, is this deferral a real option to them and how is it proven? This is when their art and true emotions of love come in hand, but who will be the one to beat the punch and possibly live freely with Tommy?
Overall, this novel is highly enjoyable in my opinion. It includes a dystopian society, mystery, and romance. What more can a reader want? Kazuo also does the right thing of putting Kathy as the narrator rather than any of the other characters. As I mentioned Kathy is not one to ruin a friendship and through the novel you discover the honest person she is and how any other charter might of affected the concept of the novel as a whole. From reading the novel, one can learn to accept and control their lives better. I say this because as mentioned the characters are clones and struggle with the fact of how they will never have a family, career or life they dream of. This makes the reader see how we have all the possible tools to get what we want and achieve it by pursuing it and not letting anything get in the way.
Kazuo is now an author who has my great respect and for others too, as I've noticed that others have been picking up his novels as well. The novel had a motion picture produced in honor of it, which could only mean the plot was great. This book will not let down any reader and is encouraged to be read. In result I am excited to watch the film as well because if you're a reader like me, it’s a fun goal to finish reading the novel as soon as possible so you can watch the film. So get to reading and compare it with the movie after!
